INSPIRATIONAL, semi-sophisticated, and anthemic... this is Firefalldown.
The London-based, Filipino-British threepiece bring their own brand of melodic funkcore to the UK underground scene, combining elements of UK indie rock, skate punk, and Motown. Their energetic live shows and songs have been described as "dynamic, intriguing and underpinned by a refreshing intelligence" (Dominic Nichols)
Firefalldown is meant to convey passion and intensity. "We play to ignite people's hearts and see them come alive... see them align themselves with their calling and live lives that break loose from clutches of the ordinary. Our vision is to see a generation living lives that make a difference." As such, they focus all of their artistic efforts on positively impacting the youth of today. They sing songs like Commissioned, lyrically a call for people to live out their God-given dreams, and Stand Tall, a song meant to stir people out of their apathy towards important questions in life.
Having recently incorporated Sonic Juan Records, the band has finished their debut Single, "Commissioned" with The Animal Farm (One Night Only) and Chris Sheldon (The Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Biffy Clyro) to be released on June 3, '09. The band has also been booked to play to a 25,000-strong audience at the Philippine Summer Slam '09 on the 30th of April, and is currently organizing a nationwide promotional tour set to begin in June '09
BAND History
Firefalldown officially came to be on the 9th of February, 2007. The band’s members came together to jam for the first time on an unusually bright and sunny London day in the summer of 2006. Previously, Joel Sablayan (the band’s bassist) had been meeting sporadically with drummer Andrew Hodgson to bounce ideas off each other in the latter’s electronic drum-kit decorated kitchen. They had originally met playing for the same worship band at a London church called Every Nation. The two continued their sessions, trusting that providence would nudge someone their way to fill the obvious gap. That someone came in the person of Jon Blaylock, a business student who was in London to finish his undergraduate studies at Thames Valley University.
Jon graduated from Business school in 2005, moved on to The Guitar Institute in mid-2006, and finished a music business postgraduate course at the University of Westminster in 2008. The three immediately set to work laying out the blue print for what would eventually become Firefalldown. Each member being relatively experienced as a gigging musician, the main obstacle was availability – both Joel and Andrew had high-responsibility, full-time jobs – Andrew held a finance management position in a retail company, while Joel worked irregular shifts as a supervising nurse at a busy hospital in the city. In spite of the hindrances, they persevered. Things eventually came into full swing around January of the following year. By that time the band had enough originals to take to the clubs.
“The songs aren’t that easy to classify. Andrew was a double-kick, snare-thrashing death-metal drummer… Joel has been in few R&B/ Funk outfits… and I fronted a punkrock band, though I do love my funk and my motown. I guess you could say we play punking, funking rock with a lot of heart.” - Jon
The result is a sound not all too familiar to the average listener… something fresh and poignant which, on some tracks, trickles down ones throat as smooth as a soul ballad, and on others, pummels through the chest as intensely as a hardcore anthem. In terms of persona, the band clearly envisions themselves being set apart, having committed to values less pervasive in the industry: integrity, perseverance, going the extra mile, and having a genuine love for those who listen, to name a few.
Many have been waiting to hear what the synergy of these three talented musicians has to offer. As they strive to balance catchiness, sophistication, and intensity of performance, this trio will undoubtedly leave a taste in the mouth, a gleam in the eye, and a pulse in ear that will leave music lovers craving for more.
Only time will tell the story of the band’s future conquests, but as of the moment, the band leaves their prospective audience with a promise…
That promise is Firefalldown.
